Our team contacts you to arrange a convenient telehealth appointment with the right specialist.

See Your Doctor

Meet Dr Nielsen by secure video from anywhere in Australia. After your consultation he writes to your GP so your care stays coordinated.

What is a telehealth psychiatrist?

A telehealth psychiatrist is a specialist medical doctor who assesses, diagnoses and treats mental health conditions by secure video instead of in a clinic room. The consultation covers the same ground as an in-person appointment: a detailed history, an assessment of how you are now, a diagnosis where one is made, and a treatment plan that can include medication and referral to therapy.

At Psychiatrists Australia, every consultation is with Dr Andrew Nielsen, a FRANZCP consultant psychiatrist with more than 20 years' experience. Because appointments are online, you can see a psychiatrist from anywhere in Australia, from the capital cities to regional and remote communities, without travelling to a clinic.

About the practice

GP referral & Medicare rebates

To claim a Medicare rebate when you see a psychiatrist online, you need a referral from your GP or another medical practitioner. A GP referral to a psychiatrist is generally valid for 12 months.

A Mental Health Treatment Plan is a different document. It is used for Medicare-rebated psychology sessions and is not needed to see a psychiatrist.

You can book without a referral, but no Medicare rebate applies and the full fee is payable. Any out-of-pocket cost is explained before your appointment.

You simply need a private space, a device with a camera, and a stable internet connection.

Telehealth psychiatrist FAQs

Is seeing a telehealth psychiatrist as good as seeing one in person?

For most adults, psychiatric assessment and ongoing care can be done very effectively by secure video. Your psychiatrist can take a thorough history, make a diagnosis, prescribe and monitor medication where appropriate, and review you over time. If an in-person assessment is ever needed, this is discussed with you.

Do I need a referral to see a telehealth psychiatrist?

You need a referral from your GP to claim a Medicare rebate. You can book without one, but the full fee applies. A Mental Health Treatment Plan is not required to see a psychiatrist.

Who will I see?

All consultations are with Dr Andrew Westergaard Nielsen (MBBS, FRANZCP), a consultant psychiatrist registered with AHPRA (MED0001389075).

Can a telehealth psychiatrist prescribe medication?

Yes. Where clinically appropriate, Dr Nielsen can start and monitor medication by telehealth. Some medicines, such as those used for ADHD, have additional state-based rules, and ongoing prescriptions are coordinated with your GP.

What do I need for a telehealth appointment?

You need a private, quiet space, a device with a camera and microphone (computer, tablet, or smartphone), and a stable internet connection. You should plan to attend from a secure location where you can speak confidentially. Our team will send you a secure video link before your appointment.

Can I see a telehealth psychiatrist if I live regionally or remotely?

Yes. Telehealth works the same wherever you are in Australia. You can see a FRANZCP psychiatrist by video from home instead of travelling hours, or flying, to a city clinic.

How much does it cost to see a telehealth psychiatrist?

Fees depend on the type and length of the appointment. With a valid GP referral, Medicare rebates reduce the out-of-pocket cost, and any gap is explained before your appointment. See our Fees & Medicare page for details.

Is a telehealth consultation confidential?

Yes. All consultations use an encrypted video platform that meets Australian health data privacy standards. Your privacy is protected in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 and Australian health legislation. The conversation remains confidential, just as it would in a physical office.
